My light broke because of these flaws after a year and a half, and is now almost unusable. 0 I have owned other Cateye lights before, and they were great. They had the old bracket consisting of two solid plastic parts with rubber inside and a screw. You screwed it on once and it wouldn't move afterwards. Both the top part (the one on the light) and the bottom part (the one on the handle bar) were replaceable. The release button was on the back under the light. It could be reached easily with clammy fingers, in the rain and with gloves. It never failed. Ever. It was just totally awesome and perfect. This one has the new and abysmal "flexible ribbon with a wheel" system. You cannot fasten it tightly enough (because it's a plastic screw pulling a plastic ribbon), so the light always c reeps. Since the light is quite heavy and its center of gravity is a bit in front of the handle bar, what happens is that it slowly creeps down, especially when the ride is a bit shaky. I used this light mainly in an urban environment on a road bike, so "shaky ride" means cobblestones, not crazy jumps over trees. I could live with re-adjusting the light once in a while (about every 2 km in my experience), but there's second problem. To readjust it while riding, the only way is to grab the light and to pull it up again. Grabbing the bracket itself is not really feasible, since it's pretty small and hidden under the light if it is mounted. Readjusting it this way puts considerable stress on the small plastic rail which connects the light and the bracket. A few days ago (after about a year and a half of almost daily use), the rail broke off (the one on the light, not the one on the bracket). In the old Cateye lights, this rail was screwed onto the light an d thus replaceable. Not in this one; if it breaks off, the light cannot be mounted any more. My light now just barely sits on the bracket, and I'm sure that it will break off completely in the next few days. Also, the release button is on the side of the light, not in the back like in the old times. Since the light is much wider than the bracket, this means that you have to have very thin fingers to push the release button, because it is hidden inbetween the light and the handle bar. I have average sized fingers, and I can just barely reach the button. It is not possible to actuate it with gloves on. For the rest, the light is fantastic, which is very sad. It looks great, it is built great, it feels right, it is weather protected, the light beam is great and everything about it is just perfect except the damn mounting system. This light with the mounting mechanism of the 20-year old HL-500 (http://www.amazon.com/Cateye-HL-500-Halogen-Bicycle-Headlight/d p/B000R6QR0O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1269388065&sr=8-1) would be the perfect bike light. I will never ever again buy a cateye light with the new mounting mechanism, and I suggest you do the same. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful By CIA CHEF (Arizona) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cateye HL-EL610RC Single Shot Plus LED Bicycle Light (Sports) My wife and I like to ride at night here in Arizona as it's really hot during the day. I bought one for myself and one for her. It's not the best light on the market but it's enough for this price point. Cars will definately see you. I wouldn't off-road with these guys though. You would wanna upgrade to something better for that. For street cruising/excercise, this works. The charger is a little querky on one but they work, no problems other than one of the lights says it's fully charged way too fast and I highly doubt it. If I didn't have two I might have sent it back. But then again, if I didn't have two I wouldn't know there was an issue with one, so....it's not a huge deal. 0 5 of 6 people found the following review helpful By Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cateye HL-EL610RC Single Shot Plus LED Bicycle Light (Sports) This light casts a very strong, somewhat tight beam. It is very solidly constructed. The unit could not be easier to mount. Great price for a a super bright, rechargeable, high quality bike headlight. I just got home from my mile long ride from the subway station to home and it just worked great!!! Fantastic! 0 |
