4.0 out of 5 stars Cateye HL-EL010 Uno LED Bike Light Review, November 15, 2009

I am an enthusiast of flashlights, headlamps, CCFT lanterns, and coolers. After comparing bike safety lights, I decided to pick up a small, lightweight bike light. This is a review of the Cateye HL-EL010 Uno LED Bike Light.

Batteries: The only lights considered are those that run on AA or AAA batteries and are efficient. This light uses a single AA battery. This was the feature that attracted me to the light. A single AA battery is cheap and results in a lightweight light.

Efficiency: The Cateye Uno LED Bike Light is as efficient as any of the Nichia-type LEDs today. The constant on is advertised to last 15 hours, which is good for one AA battery.

Output: The output is decent relative to its price range, running off of a single AA battery, and compact design. The lens magnifies the light coming out of the light, which makes the output similar to a Luxeon 1-watt light, which is good coming from what I am guessin g is a Nichia LED, especially considering the run time of 15 hours. However, do not expect this light to adequately light the path. A much more powerful light is needed for this. Though the light does light a small area of the path and will serve its purpose of alerting motorists to your presence. It does have a ring of side illumination, but in real life situations, is barely noticeable from the side.

Build: This Cateye Uno light appears to have an okay build, is very lightweight, and attaches securely to the bars on a bicycle. It has been through some bumps and does not move from its secured position. I really do appreciate the easy attachment. The light does appear water resistant, though it does not appear to be submergible.

Overall, the Cateye HL-EL010 Uno LED Bike Light appears to have an adequate build, efficient, and moderately effective safety light with a simple design. I would rate it a 3.9 out of 5.0. This rating would be higher if the Cateye light had a solid weatherproof build and had greater output using a more efficient and powerful CREE LED. I consider this a good value with regard to the price, small size and lightweight, serves for the purpose of safety, and efficiency.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be Safe, Be Seen, January 1, 2010

If you're looking for a headlight which will allow others to see you when riding at dusk or at night, this is a very good choice. To test its visibility, I propped my bike up against a parked car and all the while looking back at my bike, I walked 300-feet away. The light was bright and very noticable the entire time, especially when in flashing mode. I also walked to the other side of the street to take the vantage point of an oncoming car - still good.

I did note, however, that visibility drops off from vantage points to the side of the light (perpindicular to your bike). There are two small ports on the lens module but the amount of light emitted is pretty small compared to the light thrown out towards the front by the Uno's very effective collimating lens.

I especially liked the fact that the Uno is small but uses an AA cell as opposed to other small bike lights that use N-size or button cells. This allows me to use rechargeab le NiMH batteries like the Sanyo Eneloops. The UNO comes with a single-use alkaline AA battery.

Pro's:

- Compact size.
- Uses a common rechargeable battery size (AA).
- Battery is easy to replace (twist lens module and pull).
- Light is very visible to others, has both steady and flashing modes.
- Large on/off button at rear of housing is easy to use with gloves on.
- On/off button is difficult to accidentally turn on or off (must depress for a few seconds).
- Handlebar clamp is very secure, accepts oversize handlebar diameters.
- Light can be detached from clamp for security and allows for use as a flashlight.

Con's:

- Lens is made of a soft plastic and scratches easily (mine was scrathed out of the box).
- Side ports don't produce much light #but better than not having any ports).
- All plastic construction seems just barely sturdy enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best single cell light out there!, April 2, 2010
I was blown away with the amount of light this produces for using just ONE AA battery. I use Duracell Rechargeable and I get amazing life out of one AA Battery. I also love the no-tool mount that is so easy to put on. As a bonus, the light comes off and makes a great flashlight.

Overall distance lighting is good, but not excellent. I found that if I ride over 10 MPH, I am ahead of the lighted area. So, I would not recommend this for serious night riding. To be fair, I don't think it was designed for extended night riding, but it WILL get you home safe. I have this on in addition to my HED light when I don't need extended illumination.

The flash mode is awesome and I use this light in daylight to be seen and I have people tell me that they do see me from quite a distance. I haven't done a scientific study, but I would recommend that everyone get one of these JUST for daylight riding. Being seen is essential, as cyclists kn ow.

Overall, this is a superb light that exceeds others much more expensive. Sure, it's not HED, but it also isn't 0.

Get one and you won't be disappointed.
