5.0 out of 5 stars Practical, visible and tough, August 18, 2011

There's an active debate about the adequacy of the reflectors mandated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). I ride my bicycle at night and didn't want to take any chances with visibility, so I installed the headlight (white) and tail light (red) versions of this product. These are some of the only lights on the market that satisfy the CPSC's reflector standard, making them good enough to replace your bike's original reflectors. If you don't believe that passive reflectors, let alone active lights, are necessary, park your bike at night, walk away, shine a flashlight on the bike, and see how your bike would look to a driver. Perform this experiment for the left side, right side, front and back. What I found is that even in passive reflector mode (power off), my CatEye 570 headlight and tail light were the most obvious parts of my bike at a distance.

At first, I was skeptical about the automatic feature, which activates the lights when both of the following conditions are met: 1. darkness and 2. motion. After doing more city riding, I changed my mind. When I ride through a tunnel or a freeway underpass during the day, my lights come on without my having had to prepare in advance.

UPDATE: Daytime lighting improves visibility, so I used a cutter to cut one of the leads to the photocell. Now, my light comes on whenever my bike is in motion, whether or not it's dark outside. I recommend this 2-minute modification, though it will of course void your warranty.

I also had doubts about durability. I've returned a lot of lights, some of which broke the first time that the cases were opened. Any doubts about the CatEye 570 vanished when I accidentally dropped both of my lights onto a concrete sidewalk, from a height of about 4 fee t. The cases opened and the batteries came out, but once I had put everything back together, the lights were little the worse for wear. Way to go, CatEye!

UPDATE: My light survived a serious bike crash that obliterated my brake levers and warped my front wheel!

On a separate note, CatEye offers a wide variety of mounting options. Check out the "Small Parts Store" on the CatEye Web site, browse Amazon.com, or place a special order through your local bike shop, to obtain brackets for handlebars and head or seat tubes of different diameters; a nifty rear rack mount (L-brackets also work); and a strong and versatile clothing clip. If you often ride with bags, baskets, or bulky cargo, consider putting additional mounts on your bag or basket. I was able to use the clothing clip, plus some plastic zip ties, to add a mount to the front face of my removable basket. I used nylon screws to attach the rear rack mount to the rear face of my bag. This way, no matter which accessories I am carrying, I can hang my lights prominently.

Final note: these lights are for being seen, not seeing. The headlight (white) version does not replace a headlight with a focused beam, necessary for seeing traffic signs and monitoring the road surface for debris.

Ride safely, and remember that your bike is like anyone else's car -- so have fun customizing it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great light, infexible bracket, March 21, 2011

I really wanted to give this light 5 stars, the light itself is great, it's surprisingly bright and attention getting (it won't replace your headlight since it provides no road illumination but it's very visible to cars) It has one very bright LED that's only visible from directly in front of the light (it has a very small angle of good brightness, you really do need to be directly in front of it), and 4 small LED's that are visible from a wider angle.

I wish the battery lifetime was longer, for the size of the light I think they could have squeezed AA batteries into it instead of AAA (which would have doubled the battery lifetime). Depending on which of the 5 flash modes you select, battery lifetime is from 40 to 60 hours. (I didn't test it, just reporting what the manual says).

So far the automatic on/off seems to be working fine... it's handy but since I can easily reach the light when seated, it's not really necessary, I thin k it would be more useful if I had purchased the red taillight. Though the auto-off will probably keep me from running down a set of batteries some day.

I do like the fact that it acts as a high quality reflector so even if the batteries die, the reflector still provides some safety.

But, as I'm finding with other Cateye products, they don't put as much innovation into brackets as they do into their lighting technology. They do give you 2 different sizes of tube mounts with shims to help them fit a variety of tube sizes and if you are mounting it to any horizontal tube like a handlebar, you're in luck since the light has to be mounted horizontally.

My problem was that I wanted to mount it on my handlebar stem. The light itself has a square bracket that snaps onto the mount, so I figured "No problem, I'll just rotate it 90 degrees and snap it on". Well, even though they have a symmetrical square mount on the light, Cateye molded tiny little pl astic tabs within the mount that prevent you from rotating it. So, I had to take a small file and file those tabs away so I could rotate the light. They didn't cut a slot for the light to snap into in this rotated position, so I secured it with a zip-tie (which is probably better for me since I don't usually take off my lights when I park my bike outside, so it makes the light slightly more secure)

Cateye TL-LD570-BW front lighted reflector makes you very easy to be seen dawn, night and dusk. Unit only lights when moving and in darkness. Setting of motion detection is is very sensitive, and "darkness" seems to mean less than full daylight. There are 5 lighting modes, with attention-getting flashing sequences available.

Unit does not provide any useful lighting to allow you to see. When trail or street lighting is needed, an additional or different front light is required. (I will add a helmet light when I really need it.)

A small piece of tape is provided with the unit that can be used to cover the top clear part of the reflector. For me, this was essential for night and dawn riding. Otherwise, the light coming up from the reflector killed my night vision.

The add on tape is an impressive bit of engineering, by-the-way, demonstrating serious design over-kill with a logo, metallic inner layer, and perfectly die-cut shape. The tape also works perfectly to block the upward light. This attention to detail is true for the Cateye TL-LDS70-BW front lighted reflector itself.
