This review is from: Cygolite Expilion 800 USB Bicycle Headlight (Sports) Wasn't sure what to expect when I placed an order, but I am very pleased with the purchase. The headlight is very powerful and I am yet to need the boost mode for regular cycling. I used it as a flashlight more than once; it's just that handy. Overall this is a good looking and a great performing package. 0 UPDATE 19OCT13. I started having the dreaded charging port cover issue. It randomly pops out every now and then. Not a deal breaker, but I am taking a star off for this. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cygolite Expilion 800 USB Bicycle Headlight (Sports) In my humble opinion, the new Expilion "2nd Generation" Cree LED's - like this 800 lumen model - are an improvement over the older 600 and 700 models. I have owned the older Expilion 600 / 700 models for a while now, and have recently purchased both the newer 680 and 800 lumen models and have had the opportunity to compare them side by side. Don't take my conclusions as meaning the 600, 700 models are a bad choice - all Expilions are outstanding bike lights, and why I choose them - it is just they have changed the LED with the latest release, and I prefer the newer model as a result. Some may like the older model still, read on.... 0 To compare / contrast the newer vs older Expilions - the major difference has to do with the light cone, and its overall width and intensity. The newer Cree LEDs have a narrower overall beam than the older ones - however, this narrower light cone is also brighter, more intense and more focused. The second light "ring" on the new models, though narrower, is much brighter than the second "ring" on the older ones. My perception is the overall field of view is less on the newer models, but they light up what is in the field of view better. I like the newer model more - I like having a more focused, more intense narrow light cone than a broader one with a dimmer periphery. To test this for yourself, take both lights in a darkened room and hold a 680 in one hand and a 700 in the other. Aim them both at the ceiling on with both lights on the same setting, then do the same pointed at a wall 10 or 15 feet away. You will be able to clearly to see the contrast between the older and newer Cree LED's. Some might like the older model better, but I prefer the newer ones. Other than the 2nd generation Cree LED light cone, the lights are almost identical - they look the same, weigh the same, etc - the only thing that stands out as different is the new LED technology! To compare the Cygolite to the competition = pound for pound, I prefer the Cygolite over the NightRider Lumina's for a couple of reasons - first off, the cost / lumen is lower than the Lumina's; and most of all I prefer the Cygolites because you can quicky swap the battery out, and put in a spare one in seconds without special tools! (assuming you spent the for a spare). The Luminas are not made with convenient battery swap as the primary goal, in fact, getting the battery swapped is time consuming, requires tools, and best done on the bench where you can focus on the task - they are *definitely* are not convenient enough to swap out the battery on a long ride! That is where the Cygolite shines (pun intended); if you don't mind springing the for a spare battery, you can double up your lighting time on your ride... Haven't had it on a trail yet but have ridden through some dark city parks at night and it provides more than enough light to make you feel safe and confident that you know what's in front you. The weaker the light, the more you have to focus, look straight down the beam and hope you don't miss something in front of you. With a good light like this one, you don't have to focus nearly as much which makes the ride much more enjoyable. 0 However.......my only gripe is the poorly designed USB cover. The instructions state: "If the USB cover does not stay seated in the hole, add lubricant to the inside of the cover to slide and stay in the hole more easily." That tells me the manufacturer is aware of the issue but not willing to correct at this time so they provide some temporary solution. I mean what kind of lubricant do you use on a cover to a USB port without worrying about mucking up the contacts? I was debating between the NiteRider 700 and this but thought 100 extra Lumens for about the same price ain't a bad thing. Had I known about the cover, I would have gotten the NiteRider. |
